Mixed Sink Southampton
12/12/2010
Cambridge won 17-12
A rather eclectic bunch of players travelled from around the country to Southampton on Sunday: CUMLC drew on its enthusiastic alumni, new recruits and available players to put out a small squad. Cambridge faced a large Southampton team, aided by convenience of location and that their term is still in session (no eight weeks down there!).
The first quarter began unfavourably for Cambridge, with Southampton firing a few quick goals. The team had never previously played together- and so the cohesive Southampton squad left Cambridge confounded. Despite this, quick breaks in attack allowed CUMLC to remain only a few points behind, but behind nonetheless.
During the second quarter individual Cambridge players got more comfortable with each other. Better communication in defence and sweet attack play allowed Cambridge to rack up the points, drawing equal for the first time in the game at half time.
An increasingly agitated Southampton team were clearly dominated by Cambridge during the third and fourth quarters, with the cohesion in CUMLC showcasing the talent of Cambridge lacrosse. Goalie Tory Brown made some excellent saves as Southampton fast breaks pelted down the pitch, allowing Cambridge to retain the majority of play. Some particularly tight attack plays from Vice-Captain Lucy Hart, Hannah Jones and Katrina Hewitt left Southampton trailing, allowing Cambridge to finish the match with a comfortable lead. Quite a difference to the first quarter.
A huge thank you must go to all players for getting to Southampton in the holiday, although especially to Patrick Farmbrough, Sarah Carter, Chris Hansford and Scott Murphy. CUMLC has made a fantastic start to the season; bring on 2011.
